How In Vitro Fertilization Works

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a fertility treatment that helps women with infertility get pregnant. It is an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART).

What is IVF?

IVF is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) that can help couples who aren’t able to conceive naturally. It involves using medicines and surgery to help sperm fertilize an egg, then placing the embryo inside a woman’s uterus.

During an IVF treatment, you’ll be prescribed fertility medication to prevent premature ovulation and prepare the lining of your uterus for implantation. You might also be given birth control pills to keep your menstrual cycle regular and maximize the number of mature eggs that will be retrieved from your ovaries.

In addition, you’ll receive hormone injections that stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Then, you’ll undergo a procedure called egg retrieval that removes eggs from your ovaries one at a time with a special needle.

Egg Retrieval

In general, women under 38 are recommended to have two or three transferred (one if she has plenty of eggs), and older women should have 3 or 4.
